Problem with my brakes?

I own a 2001 ford ranger and its like the rear driver side brake locks up when im in first gear, before i get innto second gear. I dont touch the brake pedal at all, but the back driver side locks up and i skid. i can go in reverse fine but not forward. I was told it might be a spring that doesnt release the pressure or releases it randomly.. any ideas ???
