How many tie rod treads on each side of the sleeve should it be to align perfect on a 97 Astro van?

Also, should the tie rod be greased with the gun before or after screwing it in? i broke the seal somehow on the last inner and outers i put on and the screw went on and crushed the rubber boot some how
