Why does the news always use the term "battle with cancer"?

The term 'battle' is used in relation to a disease such as cancer because the sufferer is at "war" with the condition. They are at war because they often fight it off, only to be struck down with it again at a later date. The ogy used is therefore considered by most, to be quite appropriate.
